The 2006 PGA World Tour
Championships, held at Bally’s Casino and Resort in Las
Vegas Nevada, saw overall winner Shawn Powers of Alabama USA,
walk away $15,000 the richer! The three day event, held over
the week end of May 19-21st, attracted 70 entries from 6 countries
across the globe, all hoping to tap into the prize pool of $100,000.
The winners of the National Tour events of each country automatically
qualified for the FREE trip of a lifetime. Glenn Wearn from
UK PGA distributor Cosmic Video Amusements told us,” Graham
Winson and Oscar Thomas, the two UK qualifiers thoroughly enjoyed
their experience, and came back with winning prize dollars in
their pocket, which in it’s self is an anomaly for Vegas!
They have learnt an awful lot about game play from their interaction
with overseas players and I understand that the skill, competitiveness
and tension they experienced will help push them and future
UK players to bigger and better results”. The Sunday final
between Powers and Kevin Potter of South Africa was a gripping
event, and was played on an official PGA course ‘Sherwood
Country Club’ over a full 18 holes, with a final score
of 25 under par to Powers, who, as part of his prize, will be
digitally immortalized as a player option on the game. Debbie
Minardi, Vice President of Corporate Development at Global VR
commented” this first World Championship has been a resounding
success, not just for us here at GVR, but for all the distributors,
operators and players throughout the World that support our
products. With over 2,500,000 on line recorded game plays a
year and tournaments that are a reality, we look forward to
growth and support for the coming year”. Trevor Green
of Coolmax Leisure, a UK operator that traveled and supported
the players throughout the event,” the hospitality from
GVR, the camaraderie and support between all the international
players was superb…and LasVegas wow …what a back
drop!”
And the last word from John Farrington of Cosmic Video Amusements
was ”all the reports that have filtered back to us have
been so, so positive, that it looks like next year will be a
bumper occasion for all PGA World Tour golf players”.
